TIPS FOR HEALTHY EYES
brought to you by Eye2Eye:
LIGHTING:
The most inportant thing in the television viewing room is lighting. Excessively bright lights tend to wash out the picture on the TV, making your eyes strain more to discern detail, while a totally dark room creates to much of a contrastbetween the screen and surrounding rooms. Glare or reflection on the TV by the sun or lights should beavoided. A normally lit room is best where high contrast is kept to a minimum. Adjust the TV to the room lighting after the lights have been turned on.
HOW FAR AWAY ?
Children sometimes sit close to the TV and while close-up viewing is certainly not recommended, it is generally not harmful. The best distance for TV viewing is from a distance of at least five times the widthof the picture. At this distance picture details will appear better defined and the television lines and defects will be less apparent. If your child persists in watching TV from a short distance, have his/her vision checked-your child may be near sighted. In general, the better the picture, the less you're going to strain your eyes, so make sure you have your TV tuned for optimum viewing. Always set brightness and contrast levels that suit your eyes. Place the TV at eye level-looking up or down at the TV will increase strain, not to mention tired neck muscles. Just as you would with a computer, briefly look away from the screen every so often into the distance to rest your eyes. If your eyeswater or ache persistently while watching TV consult your optometrist-there could be a problem that is easily remedied.
