This October, the Low Vision Centre of Learning brings together professionals from across disciplines for three days of learning, discussion and, above all, practical ideas that can make a real difference to people living with visual impairment.
Presented in conjunction with the University of Alabama, this year’s programme tackles three very different – but increasingly important – areas of low vision care.
Day One: Diabetes – the bigger picture
Diabetes is one of South Africa’s most significant health challenges, with devastating consequences for vision and health.
But how did we get here? And are the answers really as simple as they sometimes appear?
Day One looks beyond the statistics. We’ll explore diabetes from different perspectives – what is driving the problem, what it means for vision, and what we can actually do about it.
Our speakers will bring together clinical expertise, current thinking and lived experience for a day that promises to challenge some assumptions and start some important conversations.
Day Two: Low Vision – practical solutions
What can we actually do to make life better for someone living with low vision?
Day Two is a practical MasterClass built around that question.
We’ll explore low-vision aids, everyday strategies and creative ways of solving real problems – including what to do when the ideal device simply isn’t available or affordable.
Whether you work in a highly resourced setting or need to make every rand count, the focus is on useful ideas that you can take back and use in your own practice.
Day Three: The neurological connection
We are seeing more people living with visual difficulties linked to neurological conditions – and recognising what we are seeing matters.
Why are these problems becoming more common? What should we be looking for? And how can earlier identification and intervention change outcomes?
Day Three brings the neurological and visual worlds together, helping us better understand these conditions and, most importantly, better support the people living with them.
