Hoedspruit was alive with energy, inspiration, and the unmistakable call of the African bush as the Wild About Vision International Eye Care Conference took place on 14–15 June 2025. Hosted at the stunning Radisson Hotel, the event brought together eye care professionals from across the globe for two unforgettable days of learning, networking, and pure bushveld magic.
From the moment delegates arrived, the atmosphere buzzed with anticipation. Surrounded by the majestic Drakensberg mountains and the untamed beauty of Hoedspruit, participants knew this was no ordinary conference. It was a rare blend of cutting-edge clinical education, immersive African experiences, and genuine human connection. Friday night was a casual “Meet and greet” where old friends could catch up and new connections could be made around the fireplaces in the lovely setting of the Pegasus restaurant at the Radisson Hotel.
An Unforgettable Learning Experience
The conference program lived up to its promise of being both multi-faceted and “edutaining.” International and local experts delivered a wealth of clinical knowledge, covering everything from advanced OCT interpretation to the latest in binocular vision care, myopia control, and innovative management strategies for conditions like ROP and VKC.
Renowned speakers such as Dr Dirk Booysen, Prof Bennett McAllister (USA), Prof Nicholas Rumney (UK), Prof Solani Mathebula (SA), Dr Claire Cullen (SA), Prof Wayne Gillan (SA), Leoni Joubert, Dr Nina Kriel (SA) and many others captivated audiences with insightful presentations. There was a total of 20 speakers who contributed to make the program sparkle with variety. Virtual contributions from global experts like Prof Sue Cotter (USA) and Tanya Constable (Ireland) ensured the international reach extended beyond the physical venue on the online platform available post conference.
A standout feature was the on-the-go game drive CPD sessions (sponsored by Coopervision), where delegates learned about the diversity of visual adaptations and the origins of ophthalmic terminology while surrounded by Africa’s wildlife. For many, the lectured game drives were an unforgettable highlight. Spotting lions, elephants, and buffalo while discussing visual science topics was an experience few will forget. The cheetah that made an appearance during the morning coffee break was a unique and rare experience. It was education wrapped in adventure, and the setting gave every conversation a special kind of magic.
The combination of education and adventure left many saying it was the most unique CPD experience they had ever attended.
Outstanding Feedback from Delegates and Exhibitors
When the conference concluded, feedback from attendees was nothing short of glowing. Delegates expressed that they had not only learned a great deal but had also thoroughly enjoyed themselves in a beautiful, inspiring setting. Many remarked on how the event allowed them to reconnect with colleagues, meet new peers, and have meaningful conversations with leading minds in the field.
The exhibition hall was a hub of activity throughout the event. Fifteen companies showcased their latest instruments, technologies, and products, engaging with practitioners in a relaxed yet professional environment. Essilor provided the stunning conference back packs and each exhibitor gave some lovely goodies to fill them. Each delegate received a handmade wooden occluder engraved with their name (provided by the Paediatric Training Academy) to take home as a memento. Exhibitors were unanimous in their praise, with many noting how valuable it was to reconnect face-to-face with eye care professionals and discuss innovations directly. The delegates got to go on a “Virtual Safari” and collect unique wildlife stickers from each exhibitor to complete their entry form into the lucky draw for a Lenovo Tablet computer. During the conference the amazing exhibitors provided some stunning lucky draw prizes to the delegates. After the last hilarious ethics presentation (a mock “court case” featuring a hapless optometrist (Leoni) being grilled by the HPCSA for incorrect use of social media, the lucky draw took place and one lucky delegate won the Lenovo Tablet.
Beyond the Lectures – The African Bush Experience
While the educational sessions were a highlight, the extra activities elevated the conference into a truly memorable experience. Delegates enjoyed a traditional Boma Braai under the African night sky on Saturday (again sponsored by Coopervision), where the aroma of sizzling meats and a roaring bushveld firepit created a warm, convivial atmosphere. Laughter and conversation flowed as colleagues shared stories over open flames, surrounded by the bush’s night chorus.
Sunday evening brought another magical moment: the Astronomy Evening (sponsored by HOYA). Participants were treated to a guided journey through the stars, gaining a deeper appreciation for the vast African night skies—an awe-inspiring reminder of the natural beauty surrounding them.
Hoedspruit – The Perfect Host
Hoedspruit’s charm was woven into every aspect of the conference. Known as the gateway to the Kruger National Park, this friendly town blends the raw beauty of the bush with the warmth of its people. Delegates who stayed longer explored the Blyde River Canyon—the largest green canyon in the world—took scenic flights over the Lowveld, enjoyed cultural village tours, and indulged in the local cuisine at top restaurants.
Many also visited animal rehabilitation facilities, took part in mountain biking or walking trails, and embarked on the famous Panorama Route drives. Hoedspruit proved itself not just as a conference destination but as a place where personal and professional growth could be paired with once-in-a-lifetime adventures.
A Celebration of Knowledge and Connection
One of the most celebrated aspects of Wild About Vision 2025 was its sense of community. Whether during rapid-fire learning sessions, casual conversations over coffee, or evening social events, delegates found themselves inspired not only by the content but by each other. For many practitioners, it was a chance to rekindle professional relationships, exchange ideas, and discuss challenges and opportunities in a supportive, stimulating environment.
The mix of in-person and virtual content also ensured that learning continued beyond the two-day program. The post-conference online CPD articles and recorded lectures allowed attendees to revisit topics or catch up on sessions they had missed, reinforcing the event’s educational impact.
Looking Ahead
As the final evening drew to a close and delegates bid farewell to the bushveld, there was a shared sense of gratitude and anticipation. Gratitude for the knowledge gained, the friendships renewed, and the beauty experienced—and anticipation for the next time this extraordinary gathering would take place.
The Wild About Vision conference had succeeded not only in delivering high-quality eye care education but in creating an unforgettable environment where learning, adventure, and connection came together seamlessly.
With overwhelmingly positive feedback from both delegates and exhibitors, the 2025 event has set a high standard for future conferences. It has proven that when you combine expert knowledge with the magic of the African bush, you create something truly special—something that leaves a lasting imprint on both the mind and the heart.
