Zeiss launches full UV protection in clear lenses globally

Multinational optical and optoelectronic technology company, ZEISS, will launch its trailblazing UV 400 protection technology for clear lenses in simultaneous events held around the world.

The new lenses incorporate full UV protection technology in all ZEISS clear plastic lenses. The ground-breaking technology also has an option to include anti-reflective coatings designed to have low reflectance across the UV spectral range.

ZEISS Vision Commercial Manager, Vesta Slabbert, says UV rays are just as harmful to the eyes as they are to the skin. “Just as UV rays have been linked to skin cancer, they have also been linked to ageing of the skin around the eyes as well as eye damage in the form of cataracts and macular degeneration.”

By adding a new layer to the DuraVision Platinum layer structure, a significant reduction in UV reflectivity is achieved for back Duravision UV coating, while preserving the lens’ original properties such as low reflectance of visible light, high scratch resistance and easy cleaning.

Vesta says the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) and numerous health organisations have defined the standard for UV protection as 400nm. “Eighty percent of clear lenses on the global market do not block UV up to 400nm, which poses a health risk for the eyes and surrounding areas.”

“By offering sunglass-level UV protection up to 400nm in all our clear lens materials, we have set a new standard in eye care. Now opticians can confidently offer their patients the full protection they need to protect their eyes properly,” adds Vesta.

Launch events will take place in five major South African cities, including Pretoria on Monday, 7 May 2018; Johannesburg on Tuesday, 8 May 2018; Durban on Friday, 11 May 2018; Cape Town on Monday, 14 May 2018 and Bloemfontein on Wednesday, 16 May 2018.

“We are excited to invite South Africans to experience these incredible lenses, which are the result of ZEISS’ continuous striving for optical perfection,” concludes Vesta.
